Savannah State Youth Sports Program Set for June 2-July 1
Registration is being accepted for the National Youth Sports Program (NYSP), a free day camp for boys and girls ages 10-16, sponsored by Savannah State University and the NCAA.
The program combines sports instruction with exciting educational programs. Participants receive a meal each day, a NYSP t-shirt (after the first week), a physical examination, NYSP identification card and an inkless fingerprint identification system.
Activities include swimming and a variety of other sports, which may include basketball, football (touch or flag), softball, tennis, track and field, soccer, volleyball, dance/aerobics, badminton, gymnastics and wrestling.
Applications are available at Tiger Arena and at the Savannah State University Office of Public Safety. To register, bring a copy of the child's birth certificate, emergency contact information and the application signed by a parent or guardian. For more information, call (912) 353-5181.
Variety of signing classes scheduled
Savannah Speech and Hearing Center has planned a variety of signing classes and events over the next few weeks. For complete information or to register for any of the following events, call (9122) 355-4601.
Baby Sign Class: June 3-24, Tuesdays 9:30-10:30 a.m., 1206 E. 66th St. Teaching your baby to sign before the baby has learned to speak has been shown to have many positive outcomes. Designed for babies 6-12 months. $50.
Parent/Child Class: Starting June 17 and continuing for six Tuesdays, 4-5:30 p.m., at the Richmond Hill United Methodist Church, 9050 Ford Ave. $50.
Parent/Child Class: Starting June 19 and continuing for six Thursdays, 5:30-6:30 p.m., 1206 E. 66th St. $50.
Beginner Sign Language Class: Starting June 19 and continuing for six Thursdays, 6:30-8 p.m., 1206 E. 66th St. $50.

Memorial Health Positive Parenting Class planned
The May 19 Positive Parenting Class will provide tips for parents and caregivers who want to impact the life of a child in a positive way. Topics include communicating with others who are involved in your child,s care, confidence as a parent, changes that can happen with your primary support person, siblings, talking with your child,s pediatrician, working out a morning routine, feeding, nutrition and more. The class, which meets from 7-9 p.m., will be most beneficial to parents of children younger than 4 years old. The cost is $10 per person. To register, please call (912) 350-9355.
Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will hold a walk May 31 to raise funds in order to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes. Registration is at 8 a.m. and the walk starts at 9 a.m. on Hutchinson Island. Open to the public. For more information, please call Judy Gatwood at (912) 350-8548.
Wheeze Busters for Kids meets
St. Joseph's/Candler will sponsor Wheeze Busters, an asthma support group for children, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. in the Rainbow Room at the Children's Place at Candler Hospital. Learn about reading for kindergartners
St. Joseph's/Candler's African-American Health Information and Resource Center will present a Wisdom & Gathering Session on June 3 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Center, 1910 Abercorn Street. Class for new and expectant parents on home safety
St. Joseph's/Candler Childhood Injury Prevention Program will offer an Infant and Child CPR/Injury Prevention in the Home Class on June 11 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. in the Candler Professional Building, Room 508. Babysitter's training course will be offered
St. Joseph's/Candler Childhood Injury Prevention Program will offer Babysitter's Training Class on June 18 for boys and girls ages 11-15 years old in Conference Room 2, Candler Heart & Lung Building, 5356 Reynolds St., from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The class presents exciting information on emergency response techniques, safe and creative play, and leadership skills in regard to caring for children in the absence of parents or guardians. There is a $25 fee. Please pre-register and pre-pay in order to hold your slot as classes fill up quickly. Lunch is included and each participant receives a training manual. Movies Under the stars on Tybee Island
Friends of the Tybee Theater present these benefits for renovation of the old Post Theater. Movies will be shown on the lawn at the Tybee Lighthouse approximately 30 minutes after sunset.
